Metaphors We Live By (George Lakoff & Mark Johnson) was originally published in 1980. It is now a classic book, and a revised edition with an extensive afterword was published in 2003. Our understanding of Metaphor, and its role in how we think and behave is still developing. The work of David Grove and his followers is one major area of interest.
Our Clean-Decisions website is focused on discovering how the wisdom of metaphor can be used for personal development and business decision making. By 'business' we mean any group of people who have business together - they have to make decisions for a common cause, whether they are a community, a non-profit organization, a company, or any other form of association.
Business decisions can be operational or strategic. If a poor operational decision is made, the error usually shows up almost immediately. If a poor strategic decision is made, the effects may take years to become evident, and are usually more costly. For example, if you turn left instead of right when driving around town, you find out quickly, and the consequences are not too serious. But if you fly to Richmond, Canada, instead of Richmond, California, you are in for a surprise at Customs and Immigration!
Metaphor Inquiry
One of the biggest problems of our time is with strategic decisions, which now have to be made in complex and rapidly changing circumstances. This is where Metaphor Inquiry, when used in conjunction with decision-making by consent, can help people make better Personal, Professional and Strategic Decisions more quickly. |
