Why is it called "Clean" Decision-Making?

The "Clean" word is derived from the work of David Grove and his description of "Clean Language." In his article "The Philosophy and Principles of Clean Language" David Grove explains that Clean Language is used to visit the client's model of the world and unfold solutions that are conducted within the language and logical boundaries of that world. It is clean because it does not contaminate the client's world with the assumptions and biases of the facilitator. It maintains a clear boundary between the world of the facilitator and the world of the client.

Clean Language is neither client centered nor facilitator centered. It is information-centered.  That is, it seeks information sourced from a number of different places: semantically, somatically, spatially, and also temporally in biographical, ancestral and cultural time.

Clean Language recognises and gathers together many disparate kinds of information into an organising proximal landscape, or 'psychescape' which includes words, feelings, memories, and even those kinds of information that expand time.

Clean language works with the intelligence between the lines, and  is deeply agreeable to the client's heart and soul.

In his article about Metaphor Therapy, David explains how the questions can be used to develop a map of experience that takes on a life of its own. Clean language asks questions that do not contaminate or attribute or characterize a client's experience. It is a language that enables the facilitator to enter the client's unique model of the world.

Clean language is used as a tool to translate feelings out of words into physiological imagery. It communicates effectively and efficiently with non-conscious processes. The questions allow choices and solutions to come from the true source of the information.

In our work, Clean Language and Clean Space are used as coaching and consulting tools together with the decision-making methods of Sociocracy and Holacracy. When we are being 'clean' we are not invisible. We do seek to influence. We are present for our clients and facilitate them as they discover how to model themselves, so that understanding brings liberation. Our goal is to help clients live the life they want to live.

The metaphor model of language used by David Groves, with its questions delivered in a particular rhythm and syntax, is a highly structured therapeutic technique. We have chosen to use The Mirror Model approach developed by Philip Harland, because it has a more natural conversational style that is suitable for business use.
